Jason Pilger Chevrolet is proud to sponsor the William Mitchell Memorial Basketball Tournament, as well as the William Mitchell 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament, at UMS-Wright Preparatory School in Mobile AL. Each year, these tournaments honor former student William Alexander Lewis Mitchell, who attended UMS-Wright before his tragic death in 2005. William was much more than a high school athlete, but it was his basketball skill and dedication that distinguished his time at UMS-Wright.
These unique events help the school raise money for the William Alexander Lewis Mitchell Memorial Scholarship at UMS-Wright. The tournaments were most recently held December 28 - 30, 2020, and were very well-received by people across our communities.
A Brief History of UMS-Wright Preparatory School
The UMS-Wright Preparatory School was founded by Julius Tutwiler Wright when he was just 22 years old back in 1893. This local institution is now more than 125 years old and is the oldest private school in Alabama. It was started by Dr. Wright as University Military School to provide an education that encompassed the whole person: mental, moral, and physical. Dr. Wright began each day by reading students a passage from the Bible, and his ideals remain central in the philosophy of UMS-Wright. Today the school works with parents and teachers to give each student a quality education that instills character, respect, and honor.
